Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia

Appointed by the Province of Nova Scotia as one of two public members of the Board (2016-2019 | 2019-2022 | 2022-2025) the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia is a legislated body mandated to protect the general public interests in matters related to the delivery of dental care in Nova Scotia. It establishes the educational requirements for registration and licensing for the practice of dentistry and dental assisting. It approves clinical training programs for students in dentistry and dental assisting. It also prescribes examinations, where necessary to ascertain the qualifications of persons seeking to be registered and licensed to engage in the practice of dentistry and dental assisting within the province.

Payments in Lieu of Taxes Dispute Advisory Panel

As one of two members of the Panel from Nova Scotia appointed by the Government of Canada (2010-2013), the Panel is comprised of representatives from across Canada and provides expertise and advice to the Minister of Public Works and Government Services regarding issues and concerns surrounding payments in lieu of taxes to Canadian taxing authorities.

While exempt from local taxation by virtue of the Constitution Act, 1867, the Government of Canada makes payments of approximately $470 million annually in lieu of those taxes to municipalities to share in the costs of local government where it owns property.

Nova Scotia Real Estate Commission

Appointed by the Province of Nova Scotia as one of three public members of the Board of Commissioners (2006-2009 | 2009-2012), the Commission is responsible for the regulation of the real estate industry in Nova Scotia. The Commission is an independent, industry-funded regulatory body established under Nova Scotia’s Real Estate Trading Act.

Halifax Regional Water Commission

Appointed by the Halifax Regional Municipality’s Regional Council as one of three public members of the Board of Commissioners (2009-2011), the Commission owns and operates water supply and wastewater facilities for the benefit of the residents of the Halifax Regional Municipality. Established under Nova Scotia’s Halifax Regional Water Commission Act, members of the Board of Commissioners include the Mayor, the city’s Chief Administrative Officer and three members of the Regional Council appointed by Council.

Nova Scotia Crop and Livestock Insurance Arbitration Board

Appointed by the Province of Nova Scotia as one of the three members of the Arbitration Board (2008-2011), the Board has sole jurisdiction to hear and settle disputes between the Nova Scotia Crop and Livestock Insurance Commission and an insured person arising out of the adjustment of a loss under a Contract of Insurance. Established under the Nova Scotia Crop and Livestock Insurance Act, the Board settles disputes and comments on Commission policy or process in the adjustment of claims with insured persons.
